RRB ALP Recruitment 2026
The Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) under the Ministry of Railways have released the detailed Centralised Employment Notification (CEN No. 01/2026) for 11,127 Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) posts across Indian Railways. Online applications open on 15 May 2026 and close on 14 June 2026 at 23:59 hours, with the last date for fee payment being 16 June 2026.
The indicative notice for this recruitment was published on 21 March 2026, and the detailed notification has now been released by the Chairpersons of all participating RRBs. Candidates can apply to only one RRB, and the choice of RRB once made cannot be changed at any later stage. A modification window will be open from 17 June 2026 to 26 June 2026 for any corrections in the submitted application, with a non-refundable modification fee of ₹250 per occasion.
Note: Candidates can submit only one application against this CEN. Multiple applications, whether to the same RRB or different RRBs, will lead to rejection of all such applications and debarment from future RRB and RRC examinations.

Educational Qualification: Matriculation / SSLC plus ITI from a recognised institution (NCVT/SCVT) in the trades of Fitter, Electrician, Instrument Mechanic, Millwright/Maintenance Mechanic, Mechanic (Radio & TV), Electronics Mechanic, Mechanic (Motor Vehicle), Wireman, Tractor Mechanic, Armature & Coil Winder, Mechanic (Diesel), Heat Engine, Turner, Machinist, or Refrigeration & Air-Conditioning Mechanic. Candidates with Matriculation plus Course Completed Act Apprenticeship in the above trades are also eligible. Alternatively, candidates having Matriculation plus a three-year Diploma or Degree (B.E./B.Tech) in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, or Automobile Engineering from a recognised institution can apply in lieu of ITI.
Medical Standard: A-1 as per the Indian Railway Medical Manual. Candidates must have unaided distant vision of 6/6 in both eyes (without glasses, with fogging test, not accepting +2D), near vision of Sn 0.6 in both eyes without glasses, and must pass tests for colour vision, binocular vision, field of vision, night vision, and mesopic vision. Candidates who have undergone LASIK or any other corrective eye surgery are not eligible for the post of ALP.
Nationality: A candidate must be either a citizen of India, a citizen of Nepal, a subject of Bhutan, a Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1 January 1962 with the intention of permanent settlement, or a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, or certain East African countries as specified in the notification.

For General and OBC candidates, ₹400 will be refunded after appearing in the 1st Stage CBT, duly deducting bank charges. For all other categories, the full fee of ₹250 will be refunded on appearing in the 1st Stage CBT. Refunds will be credited only to the bank account seeded with the candidate’s Aadhaar number, so candidates must ensure their Aadhaar is linked to an active bank account.
Fee payment is accepted only through online modes such as internet banking, debit card, credit card, or UPI. Modification of the application is allowed during 17 June 2026 to 26 June 2026 on payment of ₹250 per modification, but details filled in the “Create an Account” form (including mobile number, email ID) and the chosen RRB cannot be changed.
Selection Process
The recruitment process for Assistant Loco Pilot has four stages, and each stage must be cleared to move to the next. Marks will be normalised across shifts for all computer-based tests.
Stage 1 – First Stage CBT (CBT-1)
CBT-1 is a screening exam to shortlist candidates for CBT-2 and contains 75 multiple-choice questions for 75 marks in 60 minutes. The syllabus covers Mathematics, Mental Ability, and General Science (10th standard level). Negative marking of 1/3rd applies for each wrong answer. The minimum qualifying percentage is 40% for UR/EWS, 30% for OBC-NCL, 30% for SC, and 25% for ST. Marks scored in CBT-1 are not counted in the final merit, and shortlisting for CBT-2 is done at the rate of 15 times the vacancies notified for each RRB.
Stage 2 – Second Stage CBT (CBT-2)
CBT-2 has two parts and a total duration of 2 hours 30 minutes. Part A contains 100 questions in 90 minutes on Mathematics, General Intelligence and Reasoning, and Basic Science and Engineering. Part B contains 75 trade-specific technical questions in 60 minutes based on the candidate’s ITI trade or engineering discipline. The minimum qualifying percentage for Part A is the same as CBT-1 (40% UR/EWS, 30% OBC-NCL/SC, 25% ST), while Part B requires a minimum of 35% for all candidates irrespective of category. Negative marking of 1/3rd applies in both parts. Only Part A marks are counted for further shortlisting, provided the candidate qualifies in Part B.
Stage 3 – Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT)
Candidates shortlisted at eight times the number of vacancies in each community/category from CBT-2 will appear for CBAT, which tests aptitude required for the ALP role. CBAT is conducted only in English and Hindi, and there is no negative marking. A candidate must score a minimum T-score of 42 in each test battery separately to qualify. Shortlisted candidates must also submit a Self Screening Medical Declaration Report (Annexure VIII A and VIII B) signed by a General Physician and Eye Specialist from a Central or State Government Hospital or Medical College on the day of CBAT.
Stage 4 – Document Verification and Medical Examination
The final merit list is prepared by giving 50% weightage to Part A of CBT-2 and 50% weightage to CBAT scores. Candidates equal to the number of vacancies will be shortlisted for Document Verification based on their merit and zone preferences. Final appointment is subject to passing the Medical Fitness Test conducted by Railway Administration and verification of original documents and antecedents.
Medium of Examination
CBT-1 and CBT-2 questions will be available in English, Hindi, and 13 regional languages: Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Konkani, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu. Questions will be displayed in the language chosen by the candidate and in English. The language choice once made at the application stage cannot be changed later. CBAT, however, is conducted only in English and Hindi.
How to Apply for RRB ALP Recruitment 2026?
Candidates must apply online through the official RRB application portal. Keep your active mobile number, valid email ID, Aadhaar number, educational and ITI/Diploma certificates, and a recent passport-size photograph ready before starting. Candidates already having an account from previous RRB CENs of 2024 or 2025 should use the same login credentials.
Step 1: Open the official application link from the Important Links section below.
Step 2: Click on “Create an Account” and register with your name, date of birth, mobile number, email ID, and Aadhaar number as recorded in your 10th class certificate. Note that no change in these details is allowed after account creation, so fill them carefully.
Step 3: Authenticate your identity using DigiLocker or Aadhaar for smoother verification at later stages. Candidates using alternate Photo IDs will face stricter scrutiny.
Step 4: Log in and fill the application form with personal, educational, and contact details. Select your preferred RRB and the order of Zone preferences carefully, since RRB choice cannot be changed once submitted. Also complete the Self-Screening Medical Declaration questionnaire.
Step 5: Capture a live photograph as prompted by the application module (no pre-uploaded photos), and upload your scanned signature in running handwriting on white paper with black ink. You can use our Image Resize Tool to adjust the signature image to the required dimensions.
Step 6: Pay the examination fee online using Internet Banking, Debit Card, Credit Card, or UPI. The last date for fee payment is 16 June 2026.
Step 7: Preview all details, submit the application, and take a printout of the confirmation page for future reference.
Note: Candidates having LASIK or any other corrective eye surgery are not eligible for the post of ALP and must not apply. Self-declaration of physical and mental fitness is mandatory at the application stage itself.
