Gauhati University PG Admission 2026
Gauhati University has released the official admission notice for its Post Graduate programmes for the 2026-27 academic session. Admission to all Master’s programmes at the University campus and its affiliated colleges is based on the Gauhati University Post Graduate Entrance Test (PGET-2026). Eligible candidates can submit the online application through the Samarth admission portal from 6 June 2026 to 15 June 2026.
The entrance test is an offline OMR-based exam scheduled for 3, 4, and 5 July 2026 across 18 centres in Assam and the neighbouring states. Candidates should check the eligibility, exam pattern, fee, and important dates given below before they apply.

Programmes Offered
Traditional programmes include Anthropology, Arabic, Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, Botany, Chemistry, Commerce, Economics, Education, English, Geography, Geology, Hindi, History, LLM, Mathematics, Persian, Philosophy, Political Science, Physics, Sanskrit, Statistics, and Zoology.
Interdisciplinary programmes cover the Applied Sciences, Biotechnology, Cancer Biology, Microbiology, Computer Science, Information Technology, Electronics and Communication Technology, several M.Tech specialisations, Mass Communication, English Language Teaching, Environmental Science, Folklore Studies, Library and Information Science, Linguistics, Psychology, Sociology, Gender and Women’s Studies, Wildlife Science, Performing Arts, Herbal Science, and Tourism Management.
A candidate can appear in a maximum of three subjects in the PGET-2026. Only one subject can be chosen from the Traditional list and up to two from the Interdisciplinary list. No candidate may pick more than one subject from the same session on the same day, so check the entrance test schedule before locking your choices. Eligibility Criteria
The general requirement is an FYUGP or a Graduate degree under the 10+2+3 pattern with a minimum of 24 credits in the concerned subject as Major or Honours, or a regular course in that subject. Many departments fix their own subject-specific criteria, which apply mainly to the interdisciplinary programmes.
Candidates who appeared in the 6th semester examinations of 2026 and are waiting for results can also apply and take provisional admission if selected. They must submit the final grade sheet or mark sheet within 7 days of the result being declared, or the seat will be withdrawn. Candidates with a study gap of more than 5 years from the qualifying degree are not eligible for admission.

The fee can be paid only online through debit card, credit card, or internet banking. The application is treated as submitted only after the payment goes through and an online receipt is generated.
PGET-2026 Exam Pattern
The PGET-2026 has 100 multiple-choice questions with four options each, and every correct answer carries 1 mark. The exam runs for 2 hours. There is negative marking of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer, so attempt only the questions you are reasonably sure about.

Each exam day has three sessions. A candidate cannot pick more than one subject from the same session on the same date, so use this schedule to plan your subject choices before applying.

Seat Reservation
For the Traditional programmes, 50% of seats are kept for Gauhati University candidates and 50% are open to candidates from all universities, including GU. The M.Sc. in Geology follows a 30:70 ratio instead. Seats in the Interdisciplinary programmes are open to all candidates, whatever their university.
Statutory reservation applies as per Government of Assam rules: Scheduled Caste 7%, Scheduled Tribes (Plains) 10%, Scheduled Tribes (Hills) 5%, OBC/MOBC 27% (non-creamy layer), and EWS 10%. In addition, 3% of seats in each discipline are reserved for persons with benchmark disabilities. Supernumerary seats exist for North-East candidates from outside Assam, wards of GU employees, fringe village residents, NCC, NSS, ex-defence personnel, and sports or cultural quotas.
Note: Candidates applying under any reserved or other-category quota must submit the filled Other Category Form along with a printed copy of their application and self-attested testimonials to Room No. 14, Office of the Secretary, University Classes, Gauhati University, on or before 18 June 2026, in person or by post.
