Assam GT/PGT TET 2026
The Directorate of Secondary Education (DSE), Assam is expected to announce the second round of TET Recruitment Test, commonly referred to as TCR 2.0, for the posts of Graduate Teacher (GT) and Post Graduate Teacher (PGT). This recruitment is likely to be notified after the Assam Assembly Elections 2026, which are expected to take place around March–April 2026.
The first round of TCR (TCR 1.0) was conducted on 19 January 2025 to fill 9,717 vacancies across government and provincialised secondary schools in Assam. With the Chief Minister’s announcement of approximately 75,000 teacher and lecturer posts to be opened in 2026, a fresh GT/PGT recruitment drive through TCR 2.0 is widely anticipated once the election process concludes.
This article covers all available details about the upcoming Assam GT/PGT TET 2026, including expected vacancy figures, eligibility criteria based on the previous TCR notification, exam pattern, and preparation-related information. Previous GT/PGT Recruitment (TCR 1.0)
Before looking ahead to TCR 2.0, it helps to understand what happened during the previous recruitment. The DSE, Assam had released four separate advertisements in December 2023 for the recruitment of Graduate Teachers and Post Graduate Teachers in both Government and Provincialised Secondary Schools. The addendums with subject-wise vacancy breakdowns were published in October 2024, and the online application window ran from 21 October 2024 to 15 November 2024 (later extended to 20 November 2024).
The TCR 1.0 examination was held on 19 January 2025 in two shifts: Paper-I for Graduate Teachers (9:00 AM to 11:30 AM) and Paper-II for Post Graduate Teachers (1:30 PM to 4:00 PM), across nine exam venue districts: Cachar, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Kamrup, Kamrup Metro, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Nalbari, and Sonitpur. Out of 39,224 applications for GT posts, 35,757 candidates appeared. For PGT posts, 27,824 candidates appeared out of 30,358 applications received.
The PGT results were declared on 30 May 2025, while the GT results came out on 23 June 2025. The final results were declared on 17 October 2025, and appointment letters were subsequently issued to selected candidates.

What to Expect from TCR 2.0?
While no official notification has been released for TCR 2.0 yet, there are clear signals from the State Government about a fresh recruitment drive for secondary school teachers. On 18 February 2026, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that approximately 75,000 teacher and lecturer posts will be opened in 2026. This announcement came alongside the launch of the Provincialisation Management System (PMS 1.0) portal.
Given that the Assam Assembly Election is expected in March–April 2026, the Model Code of Conduct will likely come into effect around that time. Most observers expect the TCR 2.0 notification to arrive after the election process is complete — possibly by mid-2026. The DSE, Assam will release the official notification on the website madhyamik.assam.gov.in once the recruitment is formally announced.
The number of vacancies for TCR 2.0 has not been confirmed. However, given that many teaching posts in government and provincialised schools remain unfilled even after TCR 1.0, the vacancy count could be significant. We will update this section once official figures are available.
Eligibility Criteria for Assam GT/PGT TET
Based on the TCR 1.0 notification, the eligibility criteria for TCR 2.0 are expected to remain largely similar. Here is a summary of what was required in the previous round.
For Graduate Teacher (GT)
GT (Arts): Graduation or Post Graduation in Arts/Commerce from a recognized university with at least 50% marks, along with a B.Ed. degree recognized by NCTE.
GT (Science): Graduation or Post Graduation in Science from a recognized university with at least 50% marks, along with a B.Ed. degree recognized by NCTE.
GT (Mathematics): Graduation in Science with Honours/Major in Mathematics (having Physics, Chemistry or Biology as pass/minor subject), or Post Graduation in Mathematics, with at least 50% marks, along with B.Ed.
GT (Hindi): Pravin/Ratna in Hindi with 50% marks and degree with 50% marks, or BA with Hindi as one of the subjects with 50% marks and Post Graduation in Arts with 50% marks. B.T./B.Ed. required (Parangat treated as B.Ed. for Hindi teaching).
GT (Sanskrit): Shastri with 50% marks and degree with 50% marks, or BA with Sanskrit as one of the subjects with 50% marks. B.T./B.Ed. required.
For Post Graduate Teacher (PGT)
Post Graduation in the concerned subject with at least 50% marks from a recognized university, along with B.Ed. from an NCTE-recognized institution. The candidate must have studied the same subject at degree level. Degrees obtained through off-campus and distance education mode are not valid for PGT posts.
Medium-wise Requirements
Candidates must meet medium-specific requirements depending on the type of school they are applying for: Assamese, Bengali, Hindi, Bodo, or English medium. For instance, candidates applying for Assamese medium schools must have passed HSLC with Assamese as one of the subjects or hold a Diploma in Assamese from the Axom Sahitya Sabha.

Exam Pattern – TET Recruitment Test
In TCR 1.0, there was a common question paper for all GT vacancies, regardless of stream (Arts, Science, Hindi, Sanskrit), and a common paper for all PGT vacancies, regardless of subject. Based on the previous notification, the exam pattern is expected to be as follows:

The exam consisted of 140 MCQ questions carrying 1 mark each. A negative marking of 0.25 marks was applied for each wrong answer. The exam duration was 2 hours and 30 minutes. The question paper was available in four languages: Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, and English, with the English version treated as the authentic text in case of any discrepancy.
Additional Marks (NCC / Sports / Fine Arts)
Apart from the written test, candidates could earn up to 5 additional marks from any one of the following categories: 5 marks for NCC ‘C’ Certificate (3 marks for ‘B’ Certificate), 5 marks for national-level sports participation representing Assam, or 5 marks for national-level achievements in Fine Arts and Cultural Activities representing the State. Candidates who had passed the earlier HS TET/High School TET but were not yet appointed received a weightage of 5% of marks secured in that TET, up to a maximum of 5 marks.

Selection Process and Merit List
The selection in TCR 1.0 was based on the total marks obtained in the TET Recruitment Test plus additional marks from NCC/ Sports/ Fine Arts. A common merit list was prepared, with Government School vacancies filled first, followed by Provincialised School vacancies. If two candidates had the same marks, the one with higher marks in the written exam was preferred. If still tied, the candidate with the earlier date of birth was given priority.
The merit list was published with a ratio of 2 candidates against 1 vacancy for document verification. After verification, the final merit list was prepared at 1:1 ratio. Candidates selected as PGT were not reconsidered for GT posts. Up to two additional merit lists could be published if vacancies remained unfilled after the first list.
How to Apply for Assam GT/PGT TET 2026?
The online application process for TCR 2.0 has not started yet. Based on the previous recruitment cycle, here are the expected steps:
Step 1: Visit the official website madhyamik.assam.gov.in and locate the TCR 2.0 application link once the notification is released.
Step 2: Register yourself by providing the required basic details and create your login credentials.
Step 3: Log in and complete the detailed application form with personal, educational, and professional details. Select your preferred exam venue district.
Step 4: Upload scanned copies of all required documents in PDF format, including photograph, mark sheets, certificates, caste certificate (if applicable), and scanned signature.
Step 5: Pay the application fee through the online payment gateway and submit the final application. Take a printout for your records.
All applicants should have a valid Employment Exchange Registration Number before applying. Those who have applied but have not yet received the number may apply, but must obtain it before the appointment. Note: No offline application will be accepted. Multiple applications will be rejected. Government employees must upload a No Objection Certificate (NOC) at the time of applying.
