Educational Qualification: Candidates must be holders of a Degree in Law from a recognized University.
Other Criteria: Candidates must be a citizen of India. They must be practicing as an Advocate in Courts of Civil and Criminal jurisdiction and must have been so practicing for a continuous period of not less than 7 (seven) years as on the last date fixed for receipt of applications. They must also be a practicing advocate at the time of appointment.

Selection Criteria
The selection process for the Grade-I of Assam Judicial Service consists of three stages:
1. Preliminary Examination (Screening Test): This will be an objective-type test of 100 marks held on OMR sheets with a duration of 2 hours. Candidates who secure 60% or more marks will be eligible for the Main Examination, with candidates being called in a 1:10 ratio.
2. Main (Written) Examination: This stage will consist of 4 descriptive papers. Candidates who obtain 60% or more aggregate marks (subject to securing at least 45% in Papers I, II, & III and 35% in Paper IV) will be eligible for the Viva Voce. The marks in the language paper (Paper-IV) will be qualifying in nature.
3. Viva Voce / Interview: The interview will be for 50 marks. Candidates will be called in a 1:3 ratio and must secure a minimum of 60% marks in the interview. The final selection will be based on the total marks obtained in the Main (Written) Examination and the Viva-Voce.
